terry bozzio

Terry Bozzio first got his start as the drummer for Frank Zappa's backing band during the '70s, but would go on to become one of rock's most versatile session men, and form one of new wave's most visually exciting outfits, Missing Persons, along with then-wife, Dale Bozzio.
Born Terry John Bozzio on December 27, 1950 in San Francisco, California, Bozzio began playing on makeshift drums at an early age, before taking formal lessons at the age of 13 (inspired by the Beatles' infamous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show). After playing in various local garage bands during the mid-late '60s, Bozzio majored in music while attending Sir Francis Drake High School and College of Marin - as he studied timpani and various forms of percussion.
By the early '70s, Bozzio had landed gigs with such rock musicals as Godspell and Walking in my Time, in addition to playing in several jazz/fusion outfits and appearing on his first record - backing trumpeter Luis Gasca on his 1972 release, Born to Love You. 1975 saw Bozzio catch his big career break, when he auditioned for and got a spot drumming for Frank Zappa. Bozzio's tenure with Zappa lasted only three years, but the drummer was featured on ten albums and countless tours (Bozzio also appeared in the Zappa concert movie, Baby Snakes). Bozzio also served as the inspiration for several Zappa compositions during their time together, including "the Black Page" and "Punky's Whips." After leaving Zappa in 1978, Bozzio nearly landed spots with a pair of potentially interesting outfits - a jazz supergroup called Group 87 (consisting of bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Mark Isham, among others) and already-established hard rockers Thin Lizzy.
Unfortunately, both wound up not working out for Bozzio (although he would play on Group 87's self-titled debut recording a couple of years later). But Bozzio didn't have to wait long to join his next project, as he got the thumbs up to join prog rockers UK in 1979. The same year, he played on a pair of UK albums, (Danger Money and Night After Night), plus their subsequent supporting tours. Up next for Bozzio was a new wave project with his wife Dale Bozzio and former Frank Zappa guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, called Missing Persons.
The group's space age sound and look turned heads right off the bat, as they enjoyed a pair of hit singles/videos ("Words" and "Destination Unknown"), as well as a gold certified debut album, 1982's Spring Session M. But the band (and Bozzio's marriage) didn't last much longer, as Missing Persons issued only two more albums before splitting up - 1984's Rhyme and Reason and 1986's Color in Your Life. Subsequently, Bozzio has focused primarily on either recording or touring with a wide variety of acclaimed artists, including Robbie Robertson, Gary Wright, Don Dokken, Paul Hyde, Herbie Hancock, Dweezil Zappa, Richard Marx, Jeff Beck, Duran Duran, Explorer's Club, Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others.
Bozzio also began performing clinics for fellow drummers across the country, in addition to issuing an instructional home video in 1992, Solo Drums. The late '90s saw the drummer issue albums as part of the all-star trio Bozzio Levins Stevens (Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous), plus collaborative albums with Chad Wackerman (Solos & Duets Vol. I & II), and solo releases (Drawing the Circle, Chamberworks, Solo Drum Music Vol. I & II). 2001 saw Terry rejoin Missing Persons for a series of reunion concerts.

virgil donati

In January 2002, Virgil signed an endorsement deal with Pearl Drums.

After a long association, Virgil parted ways with the Premier Drum Company, and has signed a new endorsement deal with Pearl. As a lot of people may be aware, Virgil has been endorsing the Pearl Eliminator Pedals for the past two years, and now the switch to Pearl drums as well, seems like a natural progression. It's expected that the benefits of this deal will accrue to the ever-growing Virgil Donati fans.Says Virgil: "I'm thrilled to be playing Pearl Drums, and I'm excited by the possibilities that this relationship will open up. My association with Pearl will give me the opportunity to get out there even more!" Pearl has made a commitment to bring Virgil's brand of drumming to more people in more corners of this Planet! We'll announce the new series that Virgil will be using in detail in the near future. The gear section will be updated soon after. Initially, Virgil will be playing on the Pearl Masters MRX Maple 6-ply along with Sabian Cymbals.

Launched at NAMM 2005, Virgil Donati's very own signature snare drum model!

The new VG-1450 Virgil Donati signature snare drum features a 14” x 5” shell with 4 outer plies of 100% Maple over 4 inner plies of 100% Birch. The 8 ply shell produces a super bright tone accentuated even more by the 4 inner plies of Birch. With a rounded top bearing edge many drummers will find that they can play this drum wide open without any muffling. Virgil selected the snare bed used on Pearl’s Philharmonic snares which provide a totally flat bed within the width of the snares for ultimate snare response. The drums impressive styling is capped with Die Cast chrome hoops and a Smoke Flake finish. Other features include chrome plated brass tube lugs, ultra-precise Stainless Steel tension rods and SR-017 Vertical Pull Strainer.

In January 2000, at the Winter NAMM show, Sabian unveiled Virgil's signature Saturation crashes. The available sizes are 16", 17", 18" and 19".

Virgil's big thing is crashes. And because of his tremendous proficiency with double bass pedals he's extremely particular about the crashes he plays when accenting with his feet. His request was for bright, explosive sounds that would be dense with tone... sounds that were literally saturated with a full range of musical tonality, so the response would be full and resonant at all volume levels.
The response was the Signature Saturation Crash. These are available in 16", 17", 18" and 19" sizes and offer a new and powerful crash option for players who dig dynamics and value the presence of tone in their accenting. It delivers bright, powerful response boosted by a wide range of frequencies saturate the sound with color.

In September of 1999, right after Virgil's Powerhouse and Shedder sticks, Vater went back to the drawing board to create the ultimate stick for Virgil's supreme power and speed. They came out with the signature Assault Sticks.
According to Vater, once this stick was launched out to the drumming world, the orders for Virgil's Assault Sticks have been "flying out the door". With tons of orders coming in from several drum shops across the world, Virgil's new stick has really set the standard for drummers looking for that extra power in a stick without the useless weight.
Similar to a 2B in grip, Virgil's stick has a beefy shoulder and quick taper to a rounded barrel shaped tip. A great solid-feeling stick for when volume and projection are needed. Hickory model only

Five soldiers of the 158 Provost Company military police put on a concert in the Iraqi city of Basra with the help of Peavey Europe, which donated a Delta Blues 210 guitar amplifier, a Max bass amp, four PVi 100 microphones, and a number of guitar accessories such as leads and stands. The band, which had never played together before, had three days to rehearse and get used to each other and their new gear before they faced their eager public: the British troops stationed at the city. They performed under the name of the Basra City Rollers in a concert aimed at raising money for the Sun newspaper’s Help For Heroes campaign.According to a military spokesman, the gig was a great success. “The concert went down really well with all the guys. They even insisted on two encores,” he said. The money raised by the gig added to the £1,187,132 raised in the Help for Heroes campaign to build a rehabilitation centre in Surrey.Peavey’s Andy Rust said that the company had been glad to help. “It’s the least we can do, really, and if the soldiers enjoyed the gig, then so much the better.”

Drum sales have hit an all time high, according to new statistics from the MIA.Soaring to £41 million this year, drum sales have doubled since 2000, whilst sales of other types of instrument have remained stable. John Booth, of leading drum Manufacturer, Roland UK, commented on the sales boom: “We have seen drum sales increase year on year for the last ten, but this year has been unprecedented – in October, our drum sales eclipsed piano sales for the first time ever.
”Several factors are credited with responsibility for the sales growth, though it would seem in no small part down to the availability of affordable yet high-quality drum kits. Paul McManus, Chief Executive of the MIA noted: “Compared to the 1960’s, drum kits are now of a consistently higher quality and available at a much lower cost.”Improved music provision in schools and a more liberal approach to teaching rock and pop genres as part of the music syllabus may also have had a positive effect on the popularity of drumming, though Chris Wright, Managing Director of DrumWright and Honorary Treasurer of the MIA, is quick to point out that the swell in popularity is not exclusively limited to the younger generation: “The recent trend for one-off reunion performances by stadium rock legends such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, as been a real inspiration for the older generation. We’ve seen a lot of older musicians in the shop wishing to try their hand at drumming.”

drum's not dead - all music guide review

Continuing to explore the noise rock/prog rock fusion they pioneered with They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, Liars return with another concept album, Drum's Not Dead. The idea behind this album is even more abstract than They Were Wrong's conflation of witch trials and pagan rituals: Drum's Not Dead revolves around the yin-yang relationship of two forces in the creative process, personified as Mt. Heart Attack (who represents stress and self-doubt) and Drum (the embodiment of creative energy and productivity).
While this is an intriguing concept, unfortunately the actual music doesn't always live up to it. Drum's Not Dead borrows pages from the urban-pagan, atmospherically noisy playbooks of both Black Dice and Animal Collective, although the album isn't as evocative as the former band's work nor as cuddly-weird as the latter's.
Nothing here is nearly as abrasive, or immediate, as "There's Always Room on the Broom" -- throughout the album, Liars stay away from their comfort zone of dynamic noise-rock. This "quiet is the new loud" philosophy is admirable, but too often, Drum's Not Dead sounds oddly blurred and subdued. Interestingly enough for an album that uses mountains as a motif, its terrain is actually more like a valley, starting and ending with powerful tracks and dipping sharply in the middle. Drum's Not Dead begins with "Be Quiet Mt. Heart Attack," which is not only the album's best track, but one of the finest things Liars have ever done.
With dark, shimmering guitars that recall EVOL-era Sonic Youth and minimal but monumental drumming, it's full of beauty and brooding that is immediately exploded by the growling drones and heavy, tribal polythrhythms of "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack," which conjures up images of fiery, twirling drumsticks and sinister rites.
It's tempting to say that Drum's Not Dead gets its point across in just the first two tracks, but that would ignore how well "To Hold You, Drum" mixes noise and whispery negative space and sets up the album's surprisingly sweet, hopeful resolution, "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack," which also ranks among the band's finest work. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned might have been too densely packed with ideas and sounds, but Drum's Not Dead errs in the opposite direction: too many tracks feel like variations on the album's themes that don't really go anywhere. Though there are many moments of primal energy (the eerie, hypnotic taunting of "Hold You Drum," "Drum and the Uncomfortable Can"'s climactic doom) and beauty (the flowing water and brooding melody on "The Wrong Coat for You Mt. Heart Attack," "A Visit from Drum"'s expansive guitars and emotional vulnerability), they never quite jell into something that goes beyond being momentarily impressive.
Drum's Not Dead is undeniably interesting, but somehow unsatisfying; arguably the best thing about it is how it shows Liars are willing to keep pushing themselves into unknown creative territory, even if the results aren't always consistently great. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Meet Tommy Lee TOMMYLAND a fun read! Well yes I stood in line today to get a signed copy of his new book, TOMMYLAND. This is a fun read, Tommy's tell all, and he does. Some great photos and some down to earth discussion and thoughts on the life and good times of Tommy Lee. By the look of the line I thought of the tune "1985" one time hot ladies out ranked the men. The woman looked like Mothers reliving 1985. This book should do well, but Tommy should look to appear on Oprah. Looks like this may be his biggest fan base. Do you want to order a copy? Click on the link below, great stocking stuffer, hmmm another great asset of his.
